NT students win deadly design competition

Students on the Canberra Horizons camp were given the opportunity to show off their art skills in an artwork competition that will see the winning design printed onto basketball singlets. Congratulations to Miriam Puruntatameri from Xavier Catholic College, Wurrumiyanga and Kenisha Gurruwiwi from Shepherdson College Galiwin’ku, whose designs were chosen for their representation of the Foundation, being strong in culture and relating to all four partner communities.

We are happy to announce that all secondary students who receive a 90% or more attendance award at the Term 3 Starting Block Awards will receive the basketball singlet.

“The basketball singlets were a popular award last year so we wanted to make this year’s singlets even better and something that the students will feel proud to wear knowing that they came up with the idea,” said Cassie Zurek, NT Programs Manager. The front of the singlet represents Kenisha’s design. “I designed this because snake is my totem. The snake is dancing in the rain,” Kenisha.

The rainbow snake is also the dreaming for many Murri, which links the design to the Queensland partner communities. The back of the singlet represents Miriam’s design. “My drawing is about Indigenous colours and a symbol of Tiwi design,” Miriam.
